Hi, I’m Ryan Today, founder of TheTongue.com
That’s me in the photo—mid-beat, mid-miracle—playing the didgeridoo on stage at Collaboration Cures, in front of some of the world’s leading experts in upper airway health, myofunctional therapy, and integrative medical dentistry.
The skateboarding, didgeridoo-playing, homeless vagabond I once was… never could have imagined landing here.
But coherence has a way of carrying you home.
“How did you come up with this?”
That’s one of the questions I get asked most.
How did I land here—at The Tongue?
So how did I know to follow it, to trust it, to build an entire world around it?
The truth is, it wasn’t one single revelation. It was a series of increasingly spectacular moments of awareness—first within myself, then in those around me, and finally in the unfolding science that began catching up to what I had been sensing all along.
So I thought I’d share the long story. Not the tidy version, but the real one:
The story of how sound, trauma, breath, fascia, light, water, and wonder all kept pointing back… to the same unlikely source.
To the one organ that touches every part of us — and just might be the key to understanding it all.
I didn’t set out to build a platform about the tongue.
I set out to understand why it hurts so much just to be human. Why it’s so hard to do what we know is good for us. Why we can feel disconnected from our own body, our own voice, even our own will.
I wanted to numb the pain—but systems thinking -and more pain than could be numbed- helped me realize that wasn’t possible. I realized that if I couldn’t ignore the existential crises…I needed to learn to listen to it.
To sit with the one thing that I couldn’t escape: My body.
My search led me everywhere: into trauma, recovery, mysticism, neuroscience, biology, sound, movement, light. Into the streets. Into the void. And eventually… into something far more coherent than I could have imagined.
What I found was this: the body keeps the score.
But the game? The game is played with the tongue.
My path was far from linear. I began as a teen, certified in Reiki, not knowing the language for what I was doing—but feeling the heat in my hands. Feeling the transmission. That “heat” turns out to be light—infrared light, known now as resonant frequency or biogenetic radiation. Back then, I just knew something real was happening.
Later, breath became my survival tool. I played the didgeridoo on street corners—emitting low, ancient tones that vibrated me as much as they reached anyone else. I didn’t realize then that I was self-regulating my vagus nerve, amplifying nitric oxide, oxygenating my brain, and shifting my state into calm coherence. I just knew it felt good. That I could offer something of value. That sound helped me stay alive.
I moved out of the streets and into coaching, hypnosis, neuroplasticity. I studied trauma and polyvagal theory. I trained in Feldenkrais. I got rolfed. I explored movement, sound, music, energy. I witnessed firsthand how just changing tone—not even the words—could radically shift someone’s internal state.
Noticing people’s breath, their consonants, their pauses, became second nature. My clients started reprogramming themselves through sound. I didn’t need to do anything except listen more deeply. Presence became enough.
And still, underneath it all… was the tongue.
As I explored everything from fascia to the nervous system, breath to posture, brain detox to light-based healing, I kept running into one repeating structure.
The tongue. Again. And again. And again.
The tongue is not just for talking. It is:
I could keep going, because it’s even more than that, but what matters is this:
I realized: this isn’t just a muscle. It’s an organ of coherence… where every sense, every movement, every thought, every emotion, everything! …all perception, connection with ourselves and the world around us, and our ability to express it all converge in the tongue.
It’s how the body communicates with itself—mechanically, electrically, and sonically.
So I leaned in deeper.
What began as embodied intuition became validated by science across multiple domains.
Even in bioenergetics, we now know:
Sound, light, and water work together to structure energy flow in the body—and the tongue shapes all three.
I didn’t just study the tongue—I started building tools to amplify its potential.
One of them? The world’s first one-footed balance cap designed around tongue training.
Why? Because falling is one of the leading causes of death—and balance isn’t just about your ears or ankles. It’s intimately tied to tongue coordination, oral-facial tone, and your vestibular system’s link to cranial posture. But it's not just the likelihood of premature death from a fall or the injury from a fall, it's the fear of falling that stops many from living. Inside the free class and members area I go into great detail about the vestibular system and tongue connection.
There’s compelling evidence behind many products that target tongue stimulation to re-awaken dormant proprioceptive and vestibular pathways—enhancing stability, reflex timing, and even neurological processing.
Another invention that emerged from this work is the world’s first flexible didgeridoo.
Unlike the rigid traditional form, this version can be wrapped around the body, pressed to specific organs, or shared with another person. It transforms the didgeridoo from a solo instrument into a kinetic tool of social resonance, co-regulation, and biofeedback. You can move the sound through the body, with the breath, and into shared fields of coherence. It’s sound healing that moves with you. That includes others. That amplifies what’s already true in the body—so it can rise to the surface and re-pattern itself.
Another tool? Language itself.
Through what I call neurophonetics, clients learn to reshape their nervous system through tone, sound, and rhythm. Even nonverbal sound—grunts, sighs, vowels, hums—can interrupt stress patterns and rewire perception.
I coined the term neurophonetics in the mid-2000s to describe this intersection of sound, physiology, and neural patterning. At the time, it lived on the edges of science, felt in the breath of the body long before it appeared in print.
But now?
By the 2010s, neurophonetics began surfacing in PubMed and academic research, with studies appearing across linguistics, auditory processing, cognitive neuroscience, and somatic therapies. A growing body of literature now confirms what I’ve long seen in the field:
That how you sound literally reshapes how you feel, how you think, how you heal… and what you -and your body- hears does, too!
Today, neurophonetics is beginning to be explored in professional communication training, therapeutic modalities, and clinical somatic settings.
It is, in essence, a primal technology—pre-linguistic and deeply intelligent. It allows us not only to reshape behavior, but to diagnose from within:
Now, I’m developing biophonetics—the study of how the whole body speaks and listens via vibration. Every cell emits a sound. Every organ has a rhythm.
Biophonetics is the language of life speaking to life itself.
So many of us are blocked—not by ignorance, but by internal garbage. Toxins. Stagnation. Trapped emotion. Overwhelm.
I call this Garbage Body Syndrome—when the body becomes so congested, inflamed, or overloaded that even knowing what’s right becomes nearly impossible, let alone doing it. When your system is bogged down, your clarity fades, your motivation slips, and your sense of self gets buried under the weight of everything stuck inside.
And then it hit me—
One of the crowning realizations of my entire journey:
**Even detox—**the most foundational, most urgent intervention we face today— still points back to the tongue.
No matter the protocol—whether it’s fasting, sauna, binders, cold plunges, movement, breathwork—the tongue plays a role.
Not a minor role.
A central one.
Why? Because the tongue is a direct activator of multiple detox pathways:
Every swallow, every tone, every coherent vibration from the tongue sends waves through the fascia, bones, and ventricles—amplifying your body’s natural capacity to clear waste from both tissues and thought.
This realization changed everything for me. Because it meant that no matter what else someone was doing to heal…
if the tongue isn’t involved, they’re missing a core piece. And if it is involved—even subtly, even sonically—it amplifies every other modality.
This is why I say the tongue isn’t just a tool for communication or expression.
It’s an organ of purification. A hidden switch for coherence. A built-in broom for the garbage we all carry. And the best part?
It’s easy. It’s portable. It’s yours.
As my work deepened, I began stepping into a new phase of my journey—as a professional researcher.
With the support of aligned partners, I was able to attend and present at over a hundred of events across the spectrum:
Medical conferences. Biohacking expos. Spiritual retreats. Dental summits. Somatic trainings. Athletic performance labs.
From clinical to mystical, from high-tech to ancient practice—I saw it all. And something incredible began to happen.
The more I listened…
The more I walked the booths, sat through lectures, demoed products, and talked to innovators…
The more clearly I saw it:
The tongue was already there.
In the background. In the mechanism. In the missing piece.
Sometimes it showed up as a limiting factor—where the results of a modality plateaued because tongue posture, breathing patterns, or oral tension weren’t addressed.
Other times it appeared as an amplifier—the unseen element that, when integrated, took an already powerful protocol and made it profound.
And occasionally, it revealed itself as the original signal—the place where many of these interventions could have started in the first place.
It became undeniable.
From airway science to brain optimization, from lymphatic drainage to light therapy, from HRV tech to spiritual embodiment practices—the tongue kept showing up, over and over again, as a root-level interface.
And that’s when I realized:
The tongue isn’t a niche.
It’s not a specialty.
It’s a systems-level key that fits into every field of human optimization that deserves to be studied, leveraged, honored.
This insight didn’t come from theory—it came from immersion. From walking the halls, listening to the science, feeling the patterns, and watching the lightbulb moments as I spoke with experts across disciplines.
It was the ultimate confirmation: This wasn’t just my journey. It was a signal emerging from the collective.
And what I’ve learned is this:
You don’t need to be louder to be heard. You need to be truer.
And that truth begins with the tongue.
If something in you knows there’s more to your voice, your energy, your body’s intelligence…
You’re right.
Let’s listen in.
Let’s play the game.
Let’s begin with the tongue.
If you're here, it's probably because something inside you recognizes the signal too.
